Christmas Is For Sharing

“Christmas Is For Sharing” is the 2014 Christmas advert from the Sainsburys store in the UK. It commemorates an extraordinary event which took place during the First World War one hundred years ago: the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day 1914, the opposing troops laid down their arms, crossed “no-man’s land”, shared some food and  played a game of football.

“Monty the Penguin” is the heart-warming Christmas TV advert for 2014 from the John Lewis department store in the UK. It tells the story of the friendship between a little boy called Sam and his penguin Monty. Sam thinks he knows just what Monty is dreaming of for Christmas… something that will make one little penguin’s perfect Christmas day.

The Christmas Plan

This video about homelessness at Christmas was made by three sixth year secondary students and two teachers in 2012. One of the teachers composed a special song called “Christmas Time” for the video. It features the line “It’s Christmas time, keep the light on for me”.

The video would make a great introduction to dealing with homelessness at Christmas and thinking about others with pupils in senior classes. Pupils could be asked to think

It tells the story of the friendship between the unlikely pair of animals culminating in a lovely Christmas morning scene in the forest. John Lewis has also developed some classroom resources to support the story of  “The Bear and the Hare”.

Jingle Bells

This video, from the Super Simple Learning website, is great for teaching the words of Jingle Bells to younger pupils. It follows a “teach-it, learn-it” format and the tempo is much slower than the original song to make it easier for pupils to learn.
